Today, I was rushing on my cycle from Baluwatar towards Naxal to meet a friend. I braked by cycle just before reaching Chinese embassy over this grandmotherly figure.
This lady was cleaning the road side canal and was clearing leaves, wrappers, and garbage that would clog the drainage. I wondered for a while on my own on why a woman who seemed par 80 and looked decent and from middle-class family was breaking her back on the roadside rather than staying at her home cuddled in her blanket on this rainy monsoon evening. I couldn’t resist from speaking to her as I despite being 1 third of her age would never think of doing so. I went to her to make a conversation as a result to find answer to my question. She told me she was 82 and had 5/6 children who further blessed her with a dozen grandchildren.
I asked her about why she was cleaning the roadside and in return she answered, young people, are too busy making it dirty. And, it is my surroundings and I want to kill time by rather utilizing in a good way and on top, this gives me immense pleasure and satisfaction. While I was departing she added, “I plan to complete cleaning up to the main road by today evening.”
